    The City of Lufkin accepted a $4 million check Saturday afternoon which will be used toward finishing a large industrial development site that could bring hundreds of jobs to East Texas, city officials said.

    U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Tyler) presented the check on behalf of the Economic Development Association, part of the U.S. Department of Commerce. The EDA handed down the funds through the Deep East Texas Council of Governments, which acted as administrators.

    Lufkin Industries is weeks shy of completing a renovation of a downtown building that it plans to use for repairing windmill machinery. Company officials have kept the project under wraps over the last year, but said Monday they believe wind energy will play a part in the future of Lufkin Industries.

    The City of Lufkin’s Certified Retirement Community Initiative Committee was notified late Monday that Lufkin has indeed become one of the State of Texas’ Inaugural three communities to enjoy the “Texas Certified Retirement Community Certification”.
