City of Lufkin, County of Angelina, State of Texas, located 120 miles North of Houston, 166 miles Southeast of Dallas, 110 miles Southwest of Shreveport.

Angelina College
Angelina College, a two-year institution founded in 1966, has upgraded its educational facilities and is highly regarded for its health care, technical and industrial training programs. Many of the college’s students complete their education at Stephen F. Austin State University, only 20 miles away in neighboring Nacogdoches.

One of the fastest growing community colleges in the state, Angelina College continues to expand through new construction and new programs.

Two of the buildings funded through a $10.5 million bond election, the Workforce Development Center and the Community Services building, have been open for over for two years. A new Activity Center nears completion, and work has been completed on a Performing Arts Center in partnership with the Angelina County Arts Alliance.

Angelina College’s credit enrollment is now over the 4,000 mark. The college offers transfer and vocational classes and affordable cost. Community Services short courses are available for continuing education, providing job skills, and for recreation.

Located on 140-wooded acres on Highway 59 South in Lufkin, the college offers 2-year Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, and Associate of Applied Science degrees, and certificates of completion.

Community Services Division at Angelina College
The Community Services Division provides Angelina College's economic development team for citizens, businesses, industries and organizations in East Texas.

The division offers non-credit classes to the general public. There are no entrance requirements for adults who wish to take a course. However, some prerequisites, including age and educational level, mandated by the State of Texas, are required for certain health occupation courses.

The community service division office publishes a schedule of offerings fall, spring and summer and does advertising and promotion of offerings. The division office prepares instructional materials and offers certificates of completion to students. The office also reserves and prepares college facilities for use by outside persons, groups and organizations.

Course Schedules and Registration
Schedules of course offerings are available a month prior to the beginning of each semester. The schedule can be picked up in the Community Services Building or be mailed upon request. A schedule is printed for fall, spring and summer. Registration for the Community Services classes is on a first-come, first-served basis, and many courses are limited in size. Students may register for any course in room 101 of the Community Services Building from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Thursday or 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Friday. Students may also register by mail using the clip out coupon in the printed course schedule. Dates for registration at off-campus sites are published in the schedules.

Continuing Education Units (C.E.U.'s)
Angelina College awards continuing education units (C.E.U.'s) to individuals who have successfully completed educational activities for which academic credit is not awarded. The C.E.U., by nation-wide definition, is "ten contact hours of participation in an organized continuing education adult or extension experience under responsible sponsorship, capable direction, and qualified instruction". The C.E.U. is a means of recording and accounting for the various continuing education activities that one accumulated over a period of years, in transcript form.

Faculty
Faculty members are selected upon the basis of competency and motivation from college faculty and from leading business and professional men and women in the community.

Tuition
Charges for non-credit courses vary with the length and requirements of the course. The average cost of a course is $45. Course charges range from $15 to $675, with cost determined by length of course, instructional costs, and materials and supplies used. Course fees are published in each semester's schedules.

Lufkin is ideally situated for those who enjoy small town convenience with all the big city amenities. At approximately 40,000 in population, Lufkin is the largest community between Tyler in northeast Texas and Houston on the Texas Coast and is conveniently equidistant to both providing the ultimate location for the good life. Located at the junction of Hwy’s 69 (to Tyler, Beaumont and Port Arthur) and 59 (to Houston, Longview, and Shreveport) and bisected by El Camino Real “hwy 103” connecting East Texas to Natchitoches and central Louisiana Lufkin is also rich in transportation. Additionally, long term transportation plans will provide even better access to and from Lufkin as it is a planned HUB of the new Trans Texas Corridor 69 project as well as a major expansion of the Hwy103 “El Camino Real Hwy”.

Unlike other comfortably small communities, Lufkin is also home to both award winning mass transit and municipal Airports. 

The Brazos Transit District one of the largest and heaviest used rural mass  transit districts in the state serves all of Lufkin and the surrounding areas and is housed at Jennings station, a beautiful new transit station located in the heart of historic downtown Lufkin. Jennings Station will also serve inter and intra-state bus lines and is designed to accommodate Taxi service in the future as needed.

Angelina Airport,Texas Department of Transportation’s Airport of the year in 1997 continues to grow in both capacity and use. One of the cleanest and best run small airports in Texas, Angelina Airport is home to corporate fleets, private planes and military training hops and search and rescue operations alike. The airport hosts 50 – 150 private airplanes every month at one of the largest fly-ins in the region many of which come to enjoy the “best hamburgers in Texas” at the airport café. The local Experimental Aircraft Association comprised of some of the areas best and most avid pilots also provide free plane rides to youngsters at each month’s fly-ins to educate youth about the wonders or aeronautics and help promote the next generation of pilots.

Lufkin is also served by Industrial Rail provided by the Angelina and Neches River Railroad with direct connection to the Union Pacific mainline.

The City of Lufkin is pleased to announce that we are now offering an upgraded version of Click2Gov for Customer Information System (CIS) which will provides the citizens of Lufkin the ability to pay their utility bills over a secure Internet connection using a credit card. With outstanding medical facilities and personnel, Lufkin and Angelina County have become the regional health care hub of Central East Texas. Boasting two major hospitals, a Veterans Administration outpatient clinic, various specialized treatment facilities, a hospitality house, assisted living centers, and several nursing homes, Lufkin has the reputation for excellent health care and cutting edge medical technology.

Hospitals:

Memorial Health System of East Texas (www.mymemorialhealth.org) and Woodland Heights Medical Center (www.woodlandheights.net) , both award-winning facilities, offer services in Angelina County, as well as surrounding counties.

Memorial Health System of East Texas is headquartered in Lufkin and serves a 14 county area. The system provides comprehensive health care delivery services through hospitals in Lufkin, Livingston, and San Augustine, a primary care clinic, home health offices, and other affiliated health care facilities. Memorial’s flagship hospital, located in Lufkin, was founded in 1949 by local industry leaders. The hospital is currently licensed for 234 beds. The hospital serves as a comprehensive medical and surgical facility, and as a regional referral center for the system’s service area. Centers of excellence within Memorial Health System of East Texas include HeartFirst, a regional cardiac care center affiliated with the Methodist-DeBakey Heart Center – Houston, and the Arthur Temple, Sr., Regional Cancer Center, also known for its excellence, Horace C. Polk Regional Diabetes Center, W. Temple Weber Resonance Imaging Center, and Wilson McKewen Rehabilitation Center.

The Heart Center at Woodland Heights is among the national’s best for cardiac services. Woodland Heights Medical Center is recognized as one of the top 5 percent hospitals in the nation for cardiac care. Woodland Heights also is ranked number two in Texas for Cardiology and cardiac interventional procedures. With a medical staff of more than 130 physicians, the hospital offers a comprehensive list of medical and surgical specialties and treatment modalities. Woodland Heights provides inpatient surgical and critical care services, as well as women’s health, rehabilitation and skilled nursing services. Outpatient services include laboratory, advanced diagnostic imaging, including digital CT and MRI, physical and cardiac rehabilitation services, emergency services, and ambulatory surgery.

The Heart Center at Woodland Heights was the first to bring cardiac catheterization and open-heart surgery to Lufkin. Services provided by the Heart Center include catheterizations, open-heart surgery, vascular graft procedures, pacemaker installation, invasive cardiology procedures, including angioplasty, and stent placement.

In recognition of 15 years of excellence in cardiac care, the hospital recently remodeled and enlarged the Heart Center’s cardiac catheterization department and installed the latest cardiac imaging technology. The catheterization lab, the first between Tyler and Houston, provides physicians with the high quality, well-defined cardiac and vascular images critical for accurate diagnosis and for performing delicate interventional heart procedures.

The expanded department allows heart patients to remain in the cath unit from admission through recovery and discharge, offering the convenience and continuity important for heart patients and their families.

Health District:

The Angelina County and Cities Health District (www.acchd.org) was organized by community leaders in 1967 to protect and promote public health in Angelina County. Located at 503 Hill Street in Lufkin, the Health District offers full service public health programs through the Texas Department of Health. For information call (936) 632-1139. Angelina County offers an extension list of specialized physicians to provide the best care. Specialty care includes: Anesthesiology, Cardiology, Cardiovascular, Clinical Allergy, Dermatology, Emergency Medicine, Family Practice, Gastroenterology, General Surgery, Hyperbaric Medicine, Infectious Disease, Internal Medicine, Nephrology, Neurology, Neurological Surgery, OB/GYN, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Oral Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Otolaryngology, Pathology, Pediatrics, Physiatry, Plastic Surgery, Psychiatry, Podiatry, Pulmonology, Radiology, Rheumatology, Thoracic Surgery, and Urology.

Adult Day Care:

The Salvation Army Adult Day Care Center in Lufkin provides loving care a step above what senior citizens might get at home alone and is an alternative to a nursing home. Workers at the 8,000 square foot facility on Shands Drive, off Hill Street, care for adults age 55 and older in Angelina County and the surrounding area. The center is located in close proximity to Lufkin’s two hospitals.

Indoor and outdoor activities provided are musical and theatrical visiting groups, crafts, dominoes, bingo, indoor golf, daily devotions, current events, trivia, exercise, movies, table games and field trips. A dietician plans breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack menus. The center has medical supervision that includes a fulltime LVN and an RN consultant. Visiting beautician provides hair and nail care. Hospice in the Pines:

Hospice in the Pines is in its 19th year and serves a large 10-county region in East Texas and maintains its offices in two historic homes on South Raguet Street. Recent expansion provides a new in-patient hospital unit to its extensive program of hands-on help to patients with life-limiting illness. Hospice in the Pines’ goal is to make a patient comfortable at home, as long as possible, with an option of round the clock short term hospital care, staffed by Hospice, for the final days. The Inpatient Hospice Unit is located in a five room area in Memorial Health System of East Texas in Lufkin.

According to the mission statement of the not-for-profit Hospice organization, the mission of Hospice is to strive in all ways possible to relieve the physical, emotional, and spiritual pain brought on by a life-limited illness. Joe W. Elliott House:

The Joe W. Elliott House, established in 1994 as a memorial to Diboll banker Joe W. Elliott, is a hospitality ministry, offering a place for out-of-town patients and their family members to stay while receiving medical treatment in Lufkin. Operated as a joint venture by Hospice in the Pines and Memorial Health Systems of East Texas, the facility provides inexpensive lodging, laundry and kitchen facilities, and necessities that may have been forgotten by the patient. Located within walking distance of Memorial Health Systems of East Texas on Gene Sanford Drive, staff includes three full time employees, hospice chaplain, and many dedicated volunteers. Blood Center of East Texas:

The Blood Center of East Texas, located in the Frank Avenue Medical Center, is the primary supplier of blood components to eight hospitals including Memorial Health Systems in Lufkin, Livingston, and San Augustine, Lufkin’s Woodland Heights Medical Center, Nacogdoches Medical Center and Memorial Hospitals, Sabine County Hospital in Hemphill and Shelby Regional Medical Center in Center. Stewart Regional Blood Center:

Stewart Blood Center in its 55th year in East Texas, serving 28 counties, Lufkin’s center is in its third year at its new location on South John Redditt Drive. Regional centers are located in Lufkin, Tyler, Paris, Mount Pleasant, Marshall and Longview. The center collects 150 to 200 units of blood a day, to ensure area hospitals and adequate supply. Peavy Switch Recovery Center:

The Park Maintenance Department is responsible for maintenance and operations of 16 City of Lufkin parks, 1 trail, two community centers, two swimming pools, three Spray Plays, one recreation center, and other public areas.

Sam Rayburn Reservoir

Just minutes away from Lufkin rests the largest body of water wholly within the State of Texas – Sam Rayburn Reservoir. Covering 114,500 acres at normal capacity, Sam Rayburn is the most popular recreation area in the piney woods of East Texas. The reservoir was originally named McGee Bend until President Lyndon B. Johnson renamed the lake after Speaker of the House and dear friend Sam Rayburn. Today, Sam Rayburn Reservoir is one of the top five bass fisheries in the United States, with the record for largemouth bass at 16.5 pounds. It has been featured in many fishing magazines including Field & Stream, Outdoor Life, Texas Fish & Game, Texas Monthly, Southern Living, and more.

With more boat ramps available than anywhere else in Texas, Sam Rayburn Reservoir is easily accessible. Whether you desire the perfect fishing spot, relaxing sailing, a safe place to water ski or even scuba dive, Sam Rayburn Reservoir is the ultimate getaway. Other pastimes such as camping, hiking, and bird watching are just a few steps away in the beautiful Angelina National Forest.

This 18-hole golf course is currently the #9 ranked 18-hole championship golf course in the State of Texas, as selected by the Dallas Morning News. The golf course was designed by Bob Von Hagge and golfing great Bruce Devlin, and challenging is considered an understatement. The course is shaded by towering East Texas pine trees and has four different tee settings that make playing golf at Crown Colony a relaxing and diversified experience.

The 18-hole "Neches Pines" course at the Neches Pines Golf Course facility in Diboll, Texas features 7,014 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course rating is 73.9 and it has a slope rating of 133. Neches Pines golf course opened in 1970.

This very scenic course features a New England atmosphere. The signature hole is #8, a 395-yard, par 4, nicknamed "Cardiac Hill," featuring a tri-level fairway that requires a strenuous walk to reach the green at the top of the hill.

Public Walking, Hiking, and Cycling Trails

Lufkin's Azalea Trail is a 1.9 mile nature trail that runs from Grace Dunne Richardson Park to Kiwanis Park. The trail is limited to pedestrian and bicycle traffic and has an improved surface. The trail offers benches for enjoying nature along the way. There are scores of native plants to enjoy and there are small gardens of Azaleas and ornamental grasses that have been planted and are maintained by the City of Lufkin Parks and Recreation Department. The trail has security lighting along its entire length and there are call boxes located at strategic points along the trail for any emergencies.

The Urban Wildscape Trail is located within the city of Lufkin, the trail takes you through 3.5 acres of mixed pine-hardwood forest common in East Texas. Native species are identified along the trail and an interpretive brochure which points out the historic significance of tree species along the way is available inside the Texas Forestry Museum.

The barrier-free portion of the trail is 0.12 miles and is located at the trailhead where easy access parking is available. The remainder of the trail is broken into two chip-lined loops, totaling 0.58 miles. The trail contains three bridges, and outdoor classroom, bird blind, bat house, several birdhouses and bird feeders, The trail is located just inside Loop 287 in Lufkin, at 1905 Atkinson Drive (hwy. 103 East), behind the Texas Forestry Museum. The trail is open during daylight hours.

The Angelina College Forest Fitness Trail is an overall one-mile loop (0.93 miles) can be used as a fitness/walking trail or can be enjoyed at a slower pace as an arboretum where more than 50 different native trees and plants are identified. This beautiful area has been left as natural and undisturbed as possible and contains a number of large, bottomland hardwoods. The trail begins on the hill behind the Angelina College Activity Center (in Lufkin, Texas) and descends to Hurricane Creek on the undeveloped west side of the campus.

Shopping in Lufkin

Lufkin is a Main Street City with many shopping opportunities, including a number of antique shops and specialty stores throughout the downtown area. Downtown saw many improvements in 2006, including the completion of a construction project to enhance parking, sidewalks and streets. Construction also began on a new transit terminal and parking facility for downtown Lufkin.

Other popular shopping areas in Lufkin include stores located at the Angelina Village, Chestnut Village, Gaslight Square, Old Texas Plaza, Towne Square, and the Palms Shopping Center. We saw Rue 21, Tractor Supply, and Tuesday Morning join the ranks of an already established retail sector. With the opening of PetSmart, Marble Slab and Starplex Cinemas 12, Lufkin continues to maintain its status as a regional shopping and entertainment area. Lufkin Mall also brought new retail businesses to town, as we saw the addition of Hot Topic, Didough Pretzel Company, Kay Jewelers, and Great American Cookie Company, as well as the expansion of Lufkin Mall 9 cinema.

The City of Lufkin, in conjunction with Angelina County, Angelina College, and the Lufkin Independent School District, is proactively seeking “Quality Growth” and aggressively working to partner with industrial business enterprises that community leaders feel will provide quality jobs to local citizens, make a positive commitment of capital investment, and fit in with the vision of the community as a longterm “partner”. To this end, the community leaders have passed a comprehensive incentive program in conjunction with State and Federal agencies to provide a positive business environment for new and expanding businesses in an effort to encourage positive investment and job creation. Each application is considered on a case by case basis and all incentives must ultimately be approved by each governmental/taxing entity.
